New floor mural at Karel Desovnik Kajuh elementary school
Just before the start of the new school year, we, along with a group of young people under the auspices of Youth Station Moste, and a local parent initiative, embarked on the task of painting the school’s sports grounds. In two afternoon work sessions, we refreshed all the lines on the basketball and soccer courts and added a new mural to the small sports field. Now, in addition to playing games like “dodgeball,” this area can be used for games like hopscotch, twister, solving mazes, or, better yet, it’s left to the children’s imagination to invent their own games.
The new floor mural, with a stylized KDK logo, highlights the school’s identity. It’s abstract and playful, allowing for various games, including those that children can completely invent themselves. The grid layout of elements serves as a framework to which children or teachers can add new elements, letters, numbers, or symbols. It allows for floor markings to be customized with, for instance, chalk, where hopscotch can be drawn, numbers for practicing counting, or letters for learning the alphabet or crossword puzzles. The mural isn’t necessarily the final result; it can change, thus encouraging creativity in both children and adults.
