UrbanOasis is a practical example of a nature-based redesign of an urban space. At the courtyard of Prežihov Voranc Primary School in Ljubljana, we will transform areas previously used for parking into green space. Together with students, parents, and teachers, we will first design and then implement the redesign according to nature-based principles that promote biodiversity and enhance the microclimate. Simultaneously, the green areas will serve as spaces for outdoor classes, providing a pleasant environment for relaxation, socializing, and play. Through direct interaction with nature, students will learn about natural processes, adding an educational dimension to the project.

Project goals include the de-paving of a part hardened surfaces and the development of water- and air-permeable walkways and green areas. This will improve water retention and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. Additionally, carefully selected plant species will create new habitats for both plants and animals. Special emphasis is placed on actively involving children, who will learn about climate change and the role of nature in adaptation through workshops and hands-on activities.

Throughout the project, we will establish stronger connections between the school, the local community, and city authorities, who will also participate in the maintenance of the new green spaces. We will share the project results with experts in the fields of urban planning and sustainable development.
